How to Treat Buttocks Pain When Sitting

Sciatica is a condition that can cause pain along the lower extremities including the buttocks area, thighs and legs. Because the sciatic nerve comes from the spinal cord and extends up to the buttocks, legs and feet, it’s possible to feel pain on any of these parts, or even worse on all of them. In many cases, people complain about buttocks pain when sitting. There may also be a radiating sensation running from their back towards their hip and downwards. While some may only be brief, there are instances wherein the pain is simply too extreme to ignore. When this happens, it’s of course appropriate to find out how to relieve it. Basically, the key to knowing how to deal with the pain is to realize how such a condition has occurred. Sciatica is mainly associated with inflammation of the sciatic nerve or nerve roots. Some causes for this include slipped disc, reduced nerve passageways in the spinal column and strained nerves. Fortunately, through several methods, it’s possible to address the discomfort and pain caused by sciatica.

Heat and ice
A cold or ice pack can help reduce swelling and even render the area numb, relieving the buttocks from sciatic pain. Heat, on the other hand, can relax the muscles and improve the circulation around the affected area. However, it’s best to focus on warm baths for the most effective heat-based method. Alternate the application or use of heat and cold to gain beneficial results. Cold or ice packs may be applied for a few minutes every few hours while warm baths are possible from once to twice a day.

Medication
There are several over the counter medications which are good for pain relief and muscle inflammation. These include ibuprofen and aspirin. They can reduce pain and provide temporary comfort. However, it’s still best to consult a doctor to see which medicines should be properly taken and in what dosage. Usually, those who are suffering from more intense pains have to take prescription medicines. These include muscle relaxants and even anti-depressants from time to time. These sciatica medications mainly help in covering up the pain and encouraging the production of endorphins which are considered to be natural painkillers.

Massage Therapy
Massage therapy is also a very good treatment for sciatic pain in the buttocks. It primarily attempts to relax the muscles and loosen them in order to reduce the strain on the nerve roots. This also helps encourage better circulation and stronger muscles for support and relief. Massage is in fact considered a good prevention for complications brought upon by sciatic pain.

Stretching
In opposition to a popularly held notion, people with sciatica shouldn’t just be resting. Bed rest is fine but it shouldn’t be prolonged. In this case, exercise is still important because it is through exercise that the muscles become stronger and more dependable in supporting different parts of the body. Stretching helps remove strain on the sciatic nerves and it also exercises the body to better accommodate sciatica. It can release the tightness in the muscles, which soothes and relieves them.

Topical Analgesics
Topical analgesics may be ideal pain relievers. There are some people who have testified to feeling great relief after using them. Some topical analgesics come in menthol varieties which provide a soothing effect to the muscles and tissues.

Physical Therapy
Physical therapy requires the assistance of a trained professional. These include a variety of exercises that prevent muscle spasms, relax the lower extremities and get rid of pressure within the nerve roots. These may also help in developing proper posture.

Relieving buttocks pain is usually not difficult,  given the right set of procedures and modalities. Take advantage of the above ideas and you should see a substantial decrease in your pain level.
